Prof. G. Ravi
Dr. G. Ravi, who has assumed office as the eleventh Vice-Chancellor of Alagappa University, holds a high academic profile with 27 years of teaching and research experience. He hails from a progressive agriculturist’s family rooted in culture. Born in the year 1965, he had his school education in Sirkali. As a consistently meritorious student, he obtained his P.G. and Doctoral Degrees from the Bharathidasan and Anna Universities respectively. He has done Post Doctoral Research at World renowned Materials Science Laboratory – NIMS, Japan under the most prestigious JSPS Award. He joined Alagappa University in February 1995 as Lecturer in Physics and by dint of hard work and impactful research, he has risen to the top executive position at the University. He holds a D.Sc., degree in Physics obtained from Alagappa University.
He has served as Dean, Industry and Consultancy; Chairperson School of Physical Sciences; Head, Department of Physics; Director, Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and Chairman of various academic boards at the University. He has published so far around 400 quality research papers in Scopus Indexed, International and National Journals with an average impact factor of 3.8. They have attracted the attention of researchers in the specialized field with 6842 citations and have brought a h-index of 40 and also i-10 index of 182.
His research works have helped in devising instruments such as Electro Optical Modulators for Optical Communication, Optical Memories for Data Storage, Super capacitors, Sensors and Solar Cells which are directly useful to the society. The credit of publishing 1/12th of the total number of publications of the University goes to him. He holds 8 patents. He has guided 25 scholars in their Ph.D. research and underwent leadership training under LEAP programme at the University of Hyderabad and Monash University, Australia. He has won 22 prestigious awards including young scientist award, JSPS fellow award, visiting Professor and Honorary Guest Professor at Shizuoka University, Japan and Fellowships like FRSC, U.K. and FASCH. He received the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021. He has visited 23 countries across all the continents for presenting research papers. So far, he has presented 363 research papers in International / National conferences.
8 Major research projects worth Rs. 350 Lakhs were executed by him with the help of funding agencies like UGC, DST, AICTE, TNSCST etc. During his tenure as Head of the Department of Physics, MoUs were signed between the Department of Physics, Alagappa University and Stanford University, U.S.A.; Western Norway University, Norway; GRT, Singapore, to which students are being sent periodically for training. Infrastructural facilities have been improved at the Department and many sophisticated instruments were procured and installed in the Department and these facilities are being extended to other institutions. About Rs.140 lakhs were received as consultancy charges. Owing to his constant encouragement, the staff of the Department have published 600 quality research papers and improved department h-index from 28 to 67 in the last six years.
